Romance in a time of war is hardly unknown. A growing affection between two young people seems even more questionable, but human nature is not so easily constrained. Alfrid, one of Coenred’s young huscarls, has met Eawyn, the daughter of the Theign of Tadcaster. They are of a similar age and social status. In another time it would be considered a good match. In the lull between the fighting, the two young people find time to spend together. Perhaps they think that they are alone as they walk along the river in the early evening, but their elders are watching and even approving. They see in Eawyn and Alfrid the wheel of life turning as it always has. Life continues even when death is threatening.
